Overcoming Psychic Debilitation Models of Wellbeing in the Heritage Traditions 2019

The Consciousness & Culture Research Group (CCRG) fosters interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars and practitioners exploring consciousness studies, spirituality, psychology, and heritage healing traditions. The 2019 workshop at the University of Warwick, Overcoming Psychic Debilitation: Models of Wellbeing in Heritage Traditions, examined the mental health crisis among young people driven by neoliberal bio-politics. It contrasted mainstream medical models with alternative approaches rooted in Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu, and other traditions to address spiritual needs and re-capacitate minds and bodies debilitated by modern systems. The event critiqued the limitations of conventional mental health models dominated by pharmaceuticals and presented transformative alternatives rooted in Buddhist, Judaic, Sikh, Hindu, and indigenous traditions. By integrating spiritual techniques and heritage systems of healing, the workshop offered innovative frameworks for restoring wellness, addressing the mental vulnerabilities created by modern societal pressures. Presenters linked these traditions with their research to explore their potential for recapitulating bodies and minds, fostering resilience, and challenging systems of oppression.

This series highlights the importance of reintroducing spirituality and ancient wisdom into contemporary models of health and well-being.

Gurmat Therapy Repositions Guru Nanak’s Teachings at 9th Sikh Studies Conference, UC 2025

On May 8, 2025, at the 9th Dr. Jasbir Singh Saini Sikh Studies Conference (UC Riverside), Gurmat Therapy was introduced as a consciousness-based, psycho-spiritual health model rooted in Guru Nanak’s ontological wisdom. This marked a pivotal shift—Sikh philosophy was presented not merely as religion but as a transformative framework for health, coherence, and consciousness.

Panel 6: Gurmat-as-Therapy in an Age of Psychic Debilitation
Chaired by Dr. Amritjit Singh, the panel featured:

  • Dr. Arvind-Pal Singh Mandair (Univ. of Michigan): Bridging Sikh philosophy and consciousness studies

  • Davinder Singh Panesar (Founder, Gurmat Therapy): Outlined a holistic health model backed by 25+ years of psycho-spiritual work

  • Dr. Manpreet Kaur Singh (Psychiatry, UC Davis): Linked Guru Nanak’s teachings with neuroscience

  • Manvinder Kaur Gill (Doctoral Researcher): Focused on trauma and identity in Punjabi diasporic communities

The panel highlighted how Guru Nanak’s teachings offer a deeper understanding of human suffering as inner fragmentation—and healing as the return to coherence and alignment with one’s true nature.

Scientific Integration:
Key insights included:

  • Psychophysiology: Mind-body interdependence

  • Neuroplasticity: Brain change through ethical awareness

  • Trauma research: Emphasized cultural and existential integration

Gurmat Therapy Framework:
Davinder Singh Panesar presented Gurmat Therapy as a consciousness-centered health model now offered through a 2.5-year MSc program with over 25 research dissertations. Key focus areas include:

  • Psychological & Physiological Health: Identity transformation, stress regulation, trauma healing

  • Transpersonal Health: Spiritual emergence, intuitive insight, post-traumatic growth

  • Consciousness Studies: Self-inquiry, meditative states, ego transcendence

Core Thesis:
Health is not managing dysfunction—it is rediscovering coherence. Suffering stems from disconnection; healing is realignment with Being.

Academic Recognition:
The event’s success was made possible by Professor Pashaura Singh’s visionary leadership and Professor Arvind-Pal Singh Mandair’s groundbreaking work reframing Sikh Studies as a vital lens for health, psychology, and consciousness. Gratitude was extended to Kanwarpreet Singh and the organizing team.

A Conscious Turn:
This event signaled a new paradigm: Sikh wisdom as a living path for health and wholeness—where healing means returning to coherence and embodying one’s true nature.
